Lite-On LVW-5045 160GB HDD+DVD Recorder Review
Posted: 5/17/2005
"To many advertisers' dismay, VCRs changed the way people watched TV over 30 years ago. Recording a show and watching it later allowed viewers to fast forward through commercials and watch only what they wanted to watch. Today, it's only gotten better (or worse, depending on what side of the commercials you are on) with products like TiVo and home theater PCs. If you aren't quite ready to have a PC in your living room, then a TiVo or other hard drive recorder would make a great DVR (digital video recorder) for you. With its 160GB LVW-5045, Lite-On enters the hard drive recorder market with an affordable offering that has a lot of potential. The LVW-5045 not only features recording to hard drive but also to DVD and CD media, building on the capabilities of the LVW-5005 I previously reviewed."

It makes very much noise because of the HDD. The channel listof the tuner is erased when the unit is unplugged. I had many problems with the video signal in the SCART to the TV while the timer was working. I solved some problems with a firmware update, but I'm not very happywith this.

I have been trying to open the updated zipped firmware for my new Liteon 5045, but all I keep getting is the dreaded message that the file type is not recognised. Has any one else come up against this problem and if so how did you get around it.

Make sure you do the following:
1. Unzip the firmware update and burn the unzip file to a CD or CD-RW
2. When you place the CD in the LiteOn 5045, make sure you switch to the appropriate source by pressing the source button. This should take you to the screen to contunue your firmware update

LVW 5045 worked as advertised for a year. Clumsy for average consumers, but ok for geeks. All customer support disappeared soon after purchase, the DVD drive failed after year with no replacement drive of same model being available and substitutes also out of production. Will probably throw it ($300.00) away. After reviewing many forums, I got impression that Lite-On quality control and customer support is very poor to non-existant. Apparently they did well with CD R/W drives, but have failed to master the DVD R/W and consumer product hurdles so that the company's products should be avoided.

The DVD drive would not play more and more DVD's, it got to a point where the unit was extremely noisy and would only play 1 out of 2 discs. Picked up an LG drive from PC world, set it to the correct region using my PC, fit it in to the 5045 with some modification. bob's yer dog, works a treat. It would also be very easy to replace the HD.
